HHHC's Hospice Training is a total of 33 hours. This training is required of all volunteers who will be working with patients and families. It is open to HHHC employees, prospective volunteers, and community members. Training sessions are held in our Merrimack office at 7 Executive Park Drive. Sample topics include: Hospice Philosophy, Listening Skills, Grief & Bereavement, and Pain & Symptom Management. Training is offered in both daytime and evening sessions.
The course is free for those who are planning to volunteer. There is a fee of $150.00 for those in the community who are taking it for personal or professional development.
If you are taking the training to volunteer, you must attend all sessions to become an active Patient Care Volunteer. (One missed session may be made up at a later date.) We take pride in preparing you for your volunteer experience and ensuring that our patients and families receive the finest service possible. In most cases, you will not begin your volunteering until the training is completed.
Training is offered twice a year, in Spring and Fall. We try to make it accessible to individuals with a variety of schedules, so it is offered daytimes in the Spring and evenings in the Fall. An intensive 2-week Summer Training is held when the level of interest warrants it.
Fall 2013 Training dates: The Fall Hospice Training session will begin on Wednesday, September 25th from 6 – 9 pm, and continue weekly through Wednesday, December 11th (with Wednesday December 18th reserved as a makeup date if needed). We will not meet the week of Thanksgiving.
Spring 2014 Training dates: The Spring Hospice Training session will begin on Thursday, February 20th from 9 am – noon, and continue weekly through Thursday, May 1st (with Thursday May 8th reserved as a makeup date if needed).
Intensive Training Opportunity: - Summer 2014 - TBC: A special Summer Intensive Training course is sometimes offered to accommodate teachers, college students and others who wish to volunteer and for whom the regular courses are not a good fit. If there is sufficient interest, the Summer intensive training program will be over a 2-week period in July. Dates will be determined in early 2014. If you are interested in this session, please notify us as it will only be held if we have enough participants registered.
