Annual Giving Your Tax Deductible Contribution Makes a Difference in the Community
Sally is a 36 year old female who was working as a manager of a local retail store. She was diagnosed with breast cancer and required surgery and follow up chemotherapy and radiation therapy. After surgery she was seen by our agency for nursing, and wound care. Her post-operative course was complicated by infection which resulted in a six week course of IV antibiotics. Sally lost her job during this time and had to decide to either pay for her prescriptions or to pay for her COBRA insurance. She chose the prescriptions. Sally, who once had her in home care covered by insurance, now needed free care services.
Peter was a 56 year old male who was estranged from his family. He was diagnosed with lung cancer and was seen by hospice nurses in his home until he could no longer care for himself. Peter was transferred to the Community Hospice House where he was reconnected with his sons, and able to die peacefully. Peter's insurance plan did not have a hospice benefit and he required subsidized and free care for his services.
