Julie works for a large government agency in Washington DC and with two young sons, her days and nights are filled. But when her Mom entered our Community Hospice House, she knew that she needed to be at her bedside. She gave her boys a cookbook, instructed them to “help Dad with the meals”, and got on the next plane to NH.
Sitting at her Mother’s bedside one morning, she heard her Mother whisper, and bent low to catch her words…. “I’m happy” and Julie realized this was all that mattered. To know that at the end of life, one could be content, with warm sunshine coming through the window, and their loved one at their side.
As the days went on, Julie shared with our Social Worker Lynne that she and the wife of another patient had been talking about how their lives had changed just being at the Community Hospice House. “I’ve slowed down being here….you feel it when you walk through the door…it’s a different dimension…it is so peaceful here. This is where I needed to be.”
Even at a time of great sadness, patients and families are finding comfort and a quiet joy in their last moments together. And that is what hospice is all about. It is a philosophy of “living” until one dies. As the new President and CEO of Home Health & Hospice Care and the Community Hospice House, I feel honored to work with staff whose skill and professionalism is so beautifully matched with boundless compassion.
But as CEO, I also know that the doors to the Community Hospice House are kept open only through the generosity of a caring community. Today, many of our patients come to us without insurance or resources and as challenging as this is, we still do our best to accommodate them. We depend on contributions from good people like you to help us continue to do our critical work. And I want to assure you that your gift really will make a difference in someone’s life…perhaps even someone you love.
On one of the last days of Julie’s Mother’s life, she told her daughter that she wanted to take a picture of her. All Julie had with her was a cell phone, something her Mom had never used. So Julie gave her instruction. They laughed and laughed…and the pictures were taken…although the first few had her Mom’s thumb over part of the picture! Julie remembered thinking, “Even when one is dying, there are still new things you can learn and enjoy.”
With deepest appreciation,
President & CEO
